Julie Ouellet’s paintings reflect an awareness of one’s existence when faced with the “other,” the concept that the one mirrors the other. Alone, the person will lose himself in himself, to such a point as to be unconscious of his own very presence.

Immersing herself in this intimate sphere, what is private, even when openly revealed, remains intact, because it is cut up, transferred, reshaped, pulled down and reinstated within the painting. As a result of the confusion, while an erotic scene may pass before the concentrated gaze of one viewer, another will perceive, within the very same work, a devotional episode.

ulie was born in Québec in 1974. She completed a bachelor’s degree in the visual arts in 1998 at the Université du Québec à Montréal, where, in 1997, she was awarded the McAbbie Bursary and, in 1998, the Board of Trustees’ prize
from her faculty. Her work has already attracted attention through several solo and group exhibitions, including Génération Montréal, Ville peinture, which was organized by Marc Séguin in October 2002.

She is represented by the Simon Blais Gallery in Montreal and Charest-Weinberg Gallery in Key West, Florida.
